About us
The Seniors Recreation Council was officially launched in 1989 with the aim of supporting the establishment of new groups wishing to provide active recreation for the over fifties and provide advice to the community where required. The council became an incorporated body in May 1992.
The Council is a non-government organisation relying on the efforts of volunteers, however considerable administrative and logistical support is provided by the Department of Sport and Recreation (DSR), this support is ‘in-kind’ office space, mailing, phone/fax, computers and photocopying.
The council employs a part time administrator and a part time clerical assistant.
Since its inception the Council has continued to develop and implement a number of innovative programs to foster the participation of people over fifty in sport and physical activity through a range of initiatives.
These initiatives such as the Have A Go Days, Country Forums and Seminars, Add Life to Your Years Directory, pre-retirement seminars and presentations, Country affiliate network, New Club development, Volunteers education and Seniors Fun Activity Days have made a difference to the lives, lifestyle and well being of persons over fifty in WA.
Planning has previously identified key areas of endeavour for the Council, namely participation, leadership, recognition and promotion. The Council is building on its contact with clubs and organisations which are involved in Seniors interests and through this contact represents the interests of all seniors.
The Council is currently building a voluntary program delivery network, through the SRC Branch structure, in the country regions, with Avon, Bunbury, Esperance, Goldfields, Mid West, Peel, Perth, Great Southern, Southwest Capes and Upper Great Southern branches already in place. It is intended to extend this program into the other regions of the State, all the time maintaining the links with the DSR regional managers as members of the branch committees.
