Seniors Recreation Council of WA Inc.
The Seniors Recreation Council was officially launched in 1991 with the aim of supporting the establishment of new groups wishing to provide active recreation for the over fifties and provide advice to the community where required. The Council became an incorporated body in May 1992.
The Council is a non-government organisation relying on the efforts of volunteers. Core funding support is provided by The Government of Western Australia .
The Council employs a full time Executive Officer, a part time Admin Assistant and full time Program Manger.
Since its inception the Council has continued to develop and implement a number of innovative programs to foster the participation of people over fifty in sport and physical and mental activity through a range of initiatives.
These initiatives such as the Have A Go Days, Country Forums and Seminars, LiveLighter Aged Care Games, Add Life to Your Years Directory, Branch Network, New Club development, Volunteer Education, LiveLighter Seniors Activity / Information Days, Exergaming and Tech Savvy Seniors have made a difference to the lives, lifestyle and well being of persons over fifty in WA.
Planning has previously identified key areas of endeavour for the Council, namely participation, leadership, recognition and promotion. The Council is building on its contact with clubs and organisations which are involved in Senior’s interests and through this contact represents the interests of all seniors.
The Council is currently building a voluntary program delivery network, through the SRC Branch structure, in the country regions, with Avon, Bunbury, Esperance, Greater Geraldton, Great Southern, Mid West, Northampton, Peel, Perth, Rockingham, and South West Capes branches already in place. It is intended to extend this program into the other regions of the State, all the time maintaining the links with the DLGSCI regional managers as members of the branch committees.
Contribution to Western Australia
Seniors Recreation Council is regarded as the peak body for organisations supporting seniors’ involvement in sport and recreation. The Council is constantly reviewing its strategies to increase the participation of seniors in sport, recreation and associated physical and mental activity.
Within the Council’s resource limitations it has directed initiatives towards the areas of participation encouragement, policy development, community leadership promotion and the over fifties potential for community contribution.
Mission Statement
The mission of the Council, as a Non-Government (volunteer driven) organisation is to promote the ethos of ‘Healthy Ageing Through Activity’.
Also, in recognition of the high priority of this ever increasing demographic, to influence Local, State and National governments and instrumentalities in the development of practices and policies conducive to encouraging wider participation by older adults (Seniors) in recreational and sporting groups.
Strategic Plan Outline
To achieve this mission the Council will continue to support the development and expansion of existing Seniors recreation and sporting groups, as well as encouraging and supporting the establishment of new groups wishing to provide recreational and sporting opportunities for Seniors.
Over the next three years there will be an emphasis on the need to develop and strengthen the strong alliances already existing with other organisations providing services to Seniors.
This Three Year Strategic Plan will be fully developed by the Council and progressively monitored/updated each year. Also a comprehensive report of the Council’s activities for the year past will be produced annually.
In terms of the specific projects, such as ‘Have A Go Day’, ‘Add Life To Your Years’, LiveLighter Activity / Information Days’, ‘LiveLighter Aged Care Games’, ‘Seniors Ball’, ‘Seniors Exergaming WA’ and ‘Tech Savvy Seniors SRC will continue to seek separate and specific sponsorships.
Meeting the Technological Age
