The dust is finally starting to settle on a magnificent Have a Go Day 2024 a Live_Lighter Event celebrating its 32nd Anniversary in the beautiful grounds of Burswood Park. This year’s event once again saw crowds of seniors flock to the beautiful surrounds of Burswood Park where they could try a new activity, have their health checked and visit the many service providers on hand.
The Official Welcome was MC’d by Carl Langdon from 6PR Perth and it was an honour and pleasure to welcome to this years Have a Go Day Hon Don Punch MLA Minister for Regional Development; Disability Services; Fisheries; Seniors and Ageing; Volunteering, who extended a warm welcome to everyone and complimented SRCWA on an amazing event. Later at the Department of Communities Stall Hon Don Punch MLA launched a new Seniors Information Resource, which provides comprehensive information about all the various services, concessions and programs available to Seniors across the State.
A moving Welcome to Country was conducted by Mort and Vivien Hansen who invited everyone to have a great day. The WA Police Pipe Band played the National Anthem and at the conclusion of the welcome the band escorted the Over Fifty-Five Walking Assn and participants from Chung Wah as they led the official walk through the grounds.
Around 11.00am Premier Roger Cook joined us to visit a few sites, engaged in some activities and enjoyed chatting with participants who were there on the day.
This year participants were encouraged to have a go at activities on the day which included Seated Volleyball, Squash, Bonsai, Canoeing, Walking, Riding on a Trishaw, Laser Pistol Shooting, Pickle Ball, Disc Golf, many forms of Dancing, Yoga, Breathing Exercises, Sewing, Cooking Artistic Swimming on Land demonstrations and competitions and much more. Everyone was treated to free tea, coffee and bottled water at the hospitality tents assisted by a large team of volunteer’s compliments of Have a Go News and the Auscare Group.
This year our new TV media partner 9News Perth was on site and the queues of people were very long throughout the day. Their spinning wheel proved extremely popular, with giveaways including Channel 9 merchandise, return Sealink ferry tickets to Rottnest Island and McDonald’s food and beverage vouchers. 9News personalities were on site for meet and greets including Michael Thomson, Monika Kos and Tracy Vo, and Trevor Cochrane from The Garden Gurus answered a flurry of gardening questions across the day. 9News Perth also provided the marques for our information sites.
Our Newspaper media partner Have a Go News, who provide amazing support throughout the year, served 1000’s of cup of tea and coffee at their hospitality site. Have a Go News Ambassador John Burges was on hand to spin the “Chocolate Wheel of Fortune” and gave away movie tickets, Transformer Movie merchandise and double passes to Pinocchio at the Regal Theatre.
Our thanks go out to the hard-working volunteers & staff who help to facilitate Have a Go Day a LiveLighter Event.
SRCWA would also like to extend their gratitude and thanks to the team of Trustees from Wooroloo Prison who attended on Tuesday to assist the coordinators with setting up the event and on Wednesday to assist where needed throughout the day and then in the afternoon to pack down the event. Also, this year we were fortunate to have the added assistance from Telstra on Wednesday. Have a Go Day would not be the polished event it has become and would not be possible without all the volunteers who assisted at the event.
SRCWA is grateful to all its major partners and sponsors without whom this event would not be possible. Burswood Park, Crown Perth, Lotterywest, Have a Go News, WA Government, Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, Channel 9News Perth, 6PR Perth, Juniper, Telstra, Auscare Group, Phoenix Insurance Brokers, Curtin Radio, Classic Hire, Kings Tours & Travel, and Scarboro Toyota . Thank you also to Richard Dermody and Martin Yates for their photographic skills.
