Have a Go Day, a LiveLighter Event, “Age is No Barrier”
in Burswood Park, Wednesday 13th November 2024 9am to 3pm

Have a Go Day, a LiveLighter Event is an activity/information day for over 50’s, once again presented in the beautiful grounds of Burswood Park, at the event there will be a wide range of information and activities, something for everyone. The Hon Don Punch MLA, Minister for Regional Development; Disability Services; Fisheries; Seniors and Ageing; Volunteering; will officially welcome everyone at 10.30am at the entertainment stage site 105.
There will be a wide variety of activities to have a go at, a few of these are, Seated Volleyball, Disk Bowls, Trishaws for Seniors, Lazer Pistol Shooting, Squash, on land Artistic Swimming demos, exercise activities, range of dance activities and more, also remember to keep hydrated at the hospitality tents sponsored by Have a Go News, Phoenix Insurance & Auscare Group providing free tea, coffee & bottled water for participants. The Juniper entertainment stage has a line-up of artists throughout the day these will include, the Rebound RockNRoll Band, WA Social Rock & Roll Dance Group, Moyra J Scott, Kevin Bennett and a variety of other artists, this year the Entertainment Stage is sponsored by Juniper.

LiveLighter Aged Care Games Peel

The SRCWA LiveLighter Aged Care Games for the Peel region was held on Tuesday 8th October 2024 at the Murray Aquatic and Leisure Centre.
SRCWA Peel Branch president Jan McGlinn OAM and her group of dedicated volunteers supported by Alcoa volunteers presented an event for seniors in care which was enjoyed by all. Twelve teams competed in a range of activities specifically modified for seniors in care.
SRCWA Executive Officer Dawn Yates welcomed everyone and invited them to stand a join in the national anthem, she then introduced Robyn Clarke MLA – Member for Murray-Wellington to officially open the games. Dawn then invited SRCWA State Vice President Colin Steer (our MC for the day) to say a few words and get the games underway.
Our entertainment for the games at the lunch break was the legendary Eddie Storm who entertained the crowd with a variety of songs. The carers and residents go to show some of their dance moves.
Best presented teams on the day was Greenfields The “Quambie Tradies” Thank you to all the care facilities support staff for your enthusiasm and creativity in making this such a fun event.
In third place was “Bindjareb Golden Oldies 2”, second place was “Bindjareb Golden Oldies 1” and first place by a small margin was ” Wearne Warriors”. Our oldest competitor on the day was 102 years young, Chu Saw, from the “Wearne Warriors”. SRCWA thanks and acknowledges the hard work by the team from Alcoa Australia Staff, SRCWA State Branch volunteers and SRCWA staff who helped to make this a most enjoyable event for the participants and such a great success.

SRCWA Annual General Meeting

The SRCWA Annual General Meeting was held on 25th September 2024, State President Graham Bennett welcomed everyone to the meeting. Graham spoke about the history of SRCWA and acknowledged all the work done by the organisation throughout the year. Graham then handed over to SRCWA Executive Officer Dawn Yates to open the meeting and address those in attendance. Dawn welcomed representatives from the SRCWA Branches and thanked all the volunteers for their dedication to SRCWA’s programs and events and for the hours of work they all do on behalf of SRCWA. She also on behalf of SRCWA thanked the Wooroloo Trustees who provide invaluable assistance at numerous events throughout the year.

“Be Connected” Seniors Tech Expo – 2024 Get online Week

Graham Bennett was elected to the position of State President, Mavis Owens was elected to the position of Vice President and Eileen Stark was elected to the position of Accredited Volunteer Representative. Congratulations to Graham, Mavis & Eileen on your elections. SRCWA’s Annual Report for 2023/2024 was presented and well received and appreciation expressed to the office staff who compiled the report. The guest speaker at the AGM was Justine Esmonde from nbn Local who presented an enlightening talk on Digital Legacies which was enjoyed by everyone. The meeting was followed by a delicious healthy lunch.

The SRCWA Be Connected Get Online Week, Seniors Tech Expo, now in its Seventh year, was held on 18th October 2024 at the Vincent Community Centre.
At this year’s Expo SRCWA partnered with The City of Vincent who provided the venue and some of the additional catering. SRCWA was once again successful in securing a Be Connected Grant through the Good Things Foundation, this enabled SRCWA to once again conduct a very successful event.
SRCWA State President Graham Bennett officially opened the Expo at 10.00am, which included an introduction to each of the exhibitors, Martin Yates – TSS Program Manager talked about Google Translate and how beneficial it can be when travelling. Our guest speaker for the event was Ashleigh O’Reilly who presented on an increasingly important topic Internet Banking and staying safe on the internet and also spoke about the prevalence of Scams and how to avoid and report them.
Participants visited static displays and gathered a lot of interesting and informative information specific to seniors from:
ANZ Bank, Be Connected, Camera Electronic, City of Vincent Library, Consumer Protection WA ScamNet, Department of Transport, Guardian Safety Pendants, Injury Matters, Innogreen Technologies, UnitingWA Financial Wellbeing Svc, WA Inclusion Project, WA Seniors Card
Participants enjoyed a healthy and delicious lunch as well as tea, coffee and water at the event.
Our grateful thanks go to the organisations and Government Departments who supported this event, which helped to introduce and encouraged the participants to the wonders of being online and encouraged them to “Try One Thing”.
